CORRRUPTION IS ENVELOPING AFRICAN FOOTBALL
I was saddend but not surprised at the news of the prosecution of the seven Zambian footballers who were involved in match fixing scandals in Finland.Mwaba,Christopher Musonda,Stephen Kunda,Chileshe Chibwe,Godfrey Chibanga,Nchimunnya Mweetwa and Kombe were accused of claiming money running into thousands of euros from the perpetrator,Mr. Raj Perumal Wilson.
Although bribery is nothing new in African football, but the state at which it is spreading is very much alarming.I was not surprised because,if you have the CAF president himself Monsieur Issa Hayatou being accused of bribery charges,is the above incident news at all?
The players were said to have pocketed amounts ranging between 11,000 and 50,000 euros "depending on the role they played I presume"?
On the 6th of May,2011,another Zambian brothers, Dominic and Donewell Yobe took 50,000 euros each to play below par which saw their club, AC Oulu lose by 5-0.
"Bribery history" hit Africa again on the 25th of May,2011 when a Kenyan goakeeper was 50,000 euros richer playing for IFK Marieham in connection with two matches lost in 2010.
These players in one way or the other could be the bread winners of their families.Where lies their fate and that of their families now, because all of them have had their contracts abrogated and sent back to Zambia?;your guess is as good as mine.
The disgusting aspect of it is that, the players refund the money to these "masterminds" if they are unable to execute the deal.Oh! African footballers, are we that hungry?
It looks like nemesis is cacthing up with the wrong and this Mr. Raj Perumal Wilson has to be gaoled. No wonder the American sprinter, Dwain Chambers, said,"doing wrong always catches up with you"when he (Dwain) tested positive to performance enhancing drugs.
"Fais attention monsieur Hayatou, parce que c'est dommage pour le football d'Afrique"

It's a real shame that corruption has become an inbred culture in the psyche and lifestyle of Africans; and this attribute is carried with us whereever we find ourselves.
This not only goes to further mar the already non-existent good reputation of Africans, but takes the pleasure out of sports since the sporting game is no longer spontaneous but pre-planned.
All I can do is just shake my head with self-pity!
